About a year ago, my oldest son developed a real passion for inshore fishing. Note he’d done this watching YouTube and talking to good friends who are fishermen. Within weeks, my husband, Jim, and I were looking through classifieds for a used boat – wanting to support his new passion, but at the same time – fearing a large expense we’d underuse and regret.
By chance, Jim did a Google search on “boat clubs,” and we discovered the Freedom Boat Club (FBC) here in Tampa. It’s been wonderful. We normally go out two or three times a month, for a single monthly fee – no other charges but fuel used on our trips.
I’m not associated at all with the FBC – just sharing our experiences. The positives:
- Only the monthly fees. When we were considering buying – the costs to dock our boat were about the same (or more). Not to mention a loan or maintenance.
- The service has been fantastic – the FBC employees treat us like valued customers.
- Access: There are more than 25 locations across the Tampa region – from Gulf to the Bay (around St. Pete and Tampa). And there are a huge variety of boats: When the boys want to fish, there are fishing boats. When we’re going as a family (we’ve tried our hand at scalloping), we take a pontoon.
It’s exactly as they advertise – all of the fun and benefits, none of the work to maintain the boats. If you’re considering buying a boat – give them a look:
